What supervision is for

Supervision offers flexible support tailored to your ongoing professional development. You might choose to use your sessions to:

  • Navigate Career Milestones: Transition into a new placement, establish a private practice, or manage practical operational tasks.

  • Support Academic & Professional Growth: Explore your professional identity, prepare for accreditation, or refine academic work ahead of exams.

  • Deepen Clinical Insight: Gain greater awareness of your client's process, examine counter-transference, and reflect on your own internal responses.

Supervision has an accountability function, and I take it seriously: ethical practice, contracting, risk, the boundaries of competence. But if that's all it is, it becomes a report you file rather than a place you think.

I also have an interest in supervision that explores what's happening between you and your client that neither of you can yet see.

That means attending to your countertransference as information rather than distraction. It means noticing where the dynamic between us begins to mirror the dynamic in the therapy room. And it means making room for the things that are hard to say out loud ... the feeling you might not usually have, the client you may have got wrong, the session you're not proud of.

How I work

I attend to the parallel process. What happens between us often replicates what's happening between you and your client. It's usually quicker than analysis and considerably more convincing.

I'm interested in your development, not only your cases. Over time, patterns emerge in the kind of client you find difficult, and those patterns say something worth knowing about you as a clinician.

I hold context. Identity, power and difference are live in the therapy room, in supervision, and between us. I'd rather we could name that than work around it.

I'm direct. If I think you've missed something, I'll say so. I'd expect the same of you — supervision that never disagrees isn't much use.

I take the ethical frame seriously. Contracting, confidentiality, risk, record-keeping and the requirements of your professional body are part of our work, not an afterthought.

I'm happy to supervise across modalities. You don't need to work as I do for this to be useful, though in my supervisory work, I would anticipate that you would want to think about the unconscious and relational dimensions of your work.
